Harold II had no idea that whereas his men recovered from the march north and the fierce battle there, the very next morning would discover the wind shifting to blow steadily from the south for the first time in two months. Unknown to Harold, less than 48 hours later the Normans embarked for England.

William apparently promised he would construct an abbey if he received the battle and he did exactly that following his victory. William of Normandy and his forces land at Pevensey on the Sussex coast. Norman language and tradition then started to affect the country and altered the future of England. It may need taken place 950 years ago, but the Battle of Hastings remains one of the most well-known battles in English history.

A rumour began that the duke had been killed, which added to the confusion. The English forces began to pursue the fleeing invaders, however William rode through his forces, exhibiting his face and yelling that he was still alive. The duke then led a counter-attack in opposition to the pursuing English forces; some of the English rallied on a hillock before being overwhelmed. This gave both sides an opportunity to take away the useless and wounded from the battlefield.
